Mike Cooper crowns his 80th birthday celebration tour at Across Asia Film Festival with the project Tropical Gothic on Dec. 9 as part of The Night of the Living Soundtracks, an evening of soundtracks dedicated to the ghosts of Asian cinema.
A cult artist who has been present since the first editions of Across Asia FF, Cooper traverses in his work a quest for sounds and images that investigates the concept of the South, understood not only in geographical terms as much as political and poetic. His tropes are haunted by ghosts, jin, indigenous resistance, anthropological persistence, and subterranean cults, in a landscape that juxtaposes the splendor of meridian light with the ravages of colonialism and the impact it still has on these territories in new forms today.
